Cluster bus rams 11 vehicles, nine hurt
According to the police, a call was received at 6.02pm reporting that several people were injured after a cluster bus crashed into a convoy of vehicles at Brahma Kumari Chowk on New Rohtak Road.
At least nine people were injured when a cluster bus rammed 11 vehicles at Brahma Kumari Chowk in central Delhi on Wednesday evening. The police said all nine injured were rushed to different hospitals, adding that the condition of them is said to be critical. The driver and conductor of the bus are on the run, they said.
According to the police, a call was received at 6.02pm reporting that several people were injured after a cluster bus crashed into a convoy of vehicles at Brahma Kumari Chowk on New Rohtak Road.
Deputy commissioner of police (central) MS Randhawa said when a police team from Deshbandhu Gupta Road police station arrived at the spot, they found the bus abandoned. “Witnesses and passersby reported that the bus driver was speeding on a busy road when he lost control of the steering wheel. The bus first rammed a car and then crashed into four others. They said that the speed of the bus was such that it further crushed five two-wheelers and one pick-up van before coming to a halt,” the DCP said.
Randhawa said at least nine people, all of them occupants of the damaged vehicles, sustained injuries. “Six of the injured persons were shifted to Jeewan Mala Hospital and three were taken to Lady Hardinge Medical College (Smt Sucheta Kriplani Hospital). The condition of one of the injured persons, who is admitted in Jeewan Mala Hospital, is said to be critical,” the DCP said,adding that the verification of their identity and background is underway. Randhawa said the police have registered a case of rash and negligent driving against the bus driver.
A police officer, who visited the spot, said that the bus had been abandoned by the driver and conductor and they had fled the spot. “ We are looking for the driver. A technical inspection of the bus will also be carried out to find out if the accident was the fallout of a mechanical glitch,” he said, requesting anonymity.
The officer said that CCTV footage from nearby areas was also being checked to establish the sequence of events that led to the accident and to identify all the vehicles involved.
The accident also led to a massive traffic jam at New Rohtak Road. Additional traffic police and more personnel from the local police station were called in to clear the traffic and all the damaged vehicles were removed from the spot, the police officer said.
