It took the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) half a century to realise that it rains heavily in Delhi in July.

The authority has revamped the table tennis stadium at DDA's Yamuna Sports Complex to make it as much 'rain proof' as possible.

Parts of the false ceiling of the stadium collapsed on July 13 due to heavy rain. The land development agency, which was created in 1957, is developing the stadium for the Commonwealth Games.

During the heavy downpour, gutters provided for roof drainage overflowed, resulting in seepage of water that damaged the false ceiling at some locations. The dripping water also damaged the special maple wood flooring.

"We have provided 300 overflow pipes on the roof and water wouldn't seep in during heavy rainfall,” said a DDA official.

The official said, "The false ceiling is made of gypsum board, which gets soggy after getting wet. Due to this at some places the false ceiling came down and in other places it was removed to avoid any accident."

Parts of the damaged maple wood flooring have been replaced. “We have put new wood at these places so the whole floor is aligned. We have also arranged for extra wood for future exigencies,” he said.

The false ceiling has also been completely replaced. “The Yamuna Sports Complex is now ready and we have inspected it,” said DDA Vice Chairman AK Nigam.
