Anurag, who has often opened up about his personal life, was earlier married to film editor Aarti Bajaj and then to actor Kalki Koechlin. He is on friendly terms with his ex-wives, and often gives them a shoutout in his social media posts and in interviews. Anurag and Aarti were married from 1997 to 2009, while the director was married to Kalki from 2011 and 2015. He has a daughter, Aaliyah Kashyap, from his first marriage.

When asked if he was ever on Tinder as himself, Anurag said in an interview with Unfiltered By Samdish, "Haan, maine Tinder download kiya tha apne liye (Yes, I had downloaded Tinder for myself once). It showed the person closest to me; first, it showed me my manager, the next person it showed me was Guneet Monga. Then I deleted Tinder. I was like ye mere apne logo ko dikha raha hai (Tinder showed me my own people)."

Guneet married entrepreneur Sunny Kapoor in an Anand Karaj ceremony at a Gurudwara in Mumbai, last year. Guneet has produced films such as Gangs of Wasseypur, The Lunchbox, Masaan, Zubaan and Pagglait, among many others. The Elephant Whisperers (Netflix), directed by Kartiki Gonsalves and produced by Guneet, is vying for the best documentary short at the upcoming Oscars.

Anurag's last film was Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat featuring Alaya F and Karan Mehta in lead roles. The film was released on February 3. In another recent interview with Mashable India Anurag had recalled his ex-wife Aarti had kicked him out of their house for being alcoholic. He had said, “I locked myself in a room, and that’s when the drinking began. It was over. I used to drink heavily for a year and a half. Aarti kicked me out of the house. My daughter (Aaliya) was only four years old then. That was a difficult phase. I was depressed.”
