Randeep Hooda kept a promise that he had made to Dalbir Kaur, sister to Sarabjit Singh, and performed her last rites. Randeep Hooda took up the role of Sarabjit Singh in the 2016 film Sarbjit, in which Aishwarya Rai played Dalbir Kaur. The biographical drama revolved around Dalbir's fight to get justice for her brother after he was sentenced to death by a Pakistani court for alleged terrorism and spying. Randeep and Dalbir formed a bond when the actor played her late brother in the film. She told Randeep that she sees Sarabjit Singh in him, and requested him to give her 'kandha' (offer his shoulder before taking the body to the cremation) when she dies.
Randeep accepted it and immediately left Mumbai for her native village when he heard the news of her death. Dalbir died of a heart attack in Bhikhiwind near Amritsar, Punjab, on Sunday, June 26. Randeep soon arrived in the village to pay his last respects and also lit the pyre during the last rites.
Sarbjit, a film by Omung Kumar, which also starred Richa Chadha and Darshan Kumaar, was a box office success and received mixed reviews from critics. It was released over three years after Sarbjit died in Lahore after being attacked by his fellow inmates at Kot Lakhpat Jail.
At an event marking three years of her brother's death, Dalbir had said about Randeep, “I would like to tell Randeep that I have truly seen Sarabjit in him. I have a wish and I would like to take a promise from him that when I die, he should definitely give me ‘kandha’ (shoulder). My soul will receive peace that Sarabjit gave me ‘kandha.’" She had also said, "It was a matter of great joy that I found my brother Randeep. In the film, he is not just a hero, but also my brother."
