Vishwanath and Sons box office collection day 1: Venky Atluri’s next film after Dulquer Salmaan’s Lucky Baskhar was released in theatres this Friday, right on time for the Independence Day weekend. Vishwanath and Sons stars Suriya and Mamitha Baiju in lead roles. The film opened to mixed reviews and performed decently at the box office. According to the trade website Sacnilk, Vishwanath and Sons collected Rs 15.5 crore net in India on its opening day. The film saw an occupancy of 41.38% at 5034 shows. It has performed better in Tamil than Telugu, bringing in ₹9.15 crore versus ₹6 crore. The film saw decent occupancies in the morning and afternoon, at 29.85% and 33.54%, respectively. The evening and night shows had 36.38% and 62.69% occupancy, respectively.
Suriya’s previous films, Karuppu and Retro, registered good box-office openings. While Karthik Subbaraj’s Retro in 2025 registered an opening of ₹19.25 crore, it received lukewarm reviews. The film made ₹60.58 crore net in India in its lifetime. RJ Balaji’s Karuppu opened to ₹15.50 crore, less than Retro, but had better reviews. It collected ₹198.18 crore in net revenue in India over its lifetime, giving the actor a much-needed boost.
With the weekend approaching, Vishwanath and Sons is expected to see a boost in collections before an expected dip during the weekdays. It remains to be seen whether the film will beat the lifetime hauls of Suriya’s previous films.
About Vishwanath and Sons
Vishwanath and Sons is written and directed by Venky Atluri and produced by Sithara Entertainments and Fortune Four Cinemas. The film was released in both Tamil and Telugu. Suriya stars as Sanjay Vishwanath, an industrialist and professional pistol shooter, in the film. When his son has a medical emergency, he’s forced to contact the young surrogate mother Maddy, played by Mamitha Baiju. Radhika Sarathkumar and Raveena Tandon play key roles in it.
Hindustan Times’ review of the film reads: “With Vishwanath & Sons, Venky is smart enough to answer most of the questions that pop through your head while watching the film. He delivers a comedy-drama that’s self-aware in places and blind to its own trappings in others. Think of the film as something similar to Jean Webster’s novel Daddy-Long-Legs. Except Venky is aware that this is not 1912, so he’s careful about how he lets Sanjay and Maddy’s relationship unravel.”
Vishwanath and Sons was released in theatres on August 14.
