How does Ranabaali compare with previous blockbusters?
Rashmika Mandanna has delivered several major box-office hits in recent years, making Ranabaali’s opening-weekend numbers stand out. What is Ranabaali about?
Set during the Great Famine of 1876–78 in the Madras Presidency, Ranabaali tells a fictional story rooted in British colonial rule. Rather than being a straightforward historical biopic, the film takes an alternate-history approach, imagining a rebellion against the British. Vijay plays Singanamala Bobbili Ranabaali, a warrior from Rayalaseema who rises against colonial oppression to protect his people. Rashmika Mandanna plays Jayamma, his wife and a key part of his personal journey.
South African actor Arnold Vosloo, known for The Mummy, plays Sir Theodore Hector, a fictional British commissioner whose character draws inspiration from colonial administrators of the time. Rahul Sankrityan, who previously directed Shyam Singha Roy, brings together the story of a man fighting for his people and a larger battle against British rule.
