Be it Ananya Panday, Janhvi Kapoor or Tara Sutaria - millennials and Gen-Z icons have warmed up to gravity-defying mini dresses and itsy-bitsy micro shorts like never before.

The hemlines this summer seem to be going up and our millennial Bollywood beauties have fallen for the allure of the mini silhouette hook, line and sinker. Be it Ananya Panday, Janhvi Kapoor or Tara Sutaria - millennials and Gen- Z icons have warmed up to gravity-defying mini dresses and itsy-bitsy micro shorts like never before. Internationally, designers like Saint Laurent, Balmain, Hedi Slimane and in India, labels like Falguni and Shane Peacock have brought fashion’s attention to the thigh-baring numbers.

Invented in the swinging ‘60s by the iconic Mary Quant and André Courrèges - the mini in its contemporary avatar comes with holographic shine and a high-low hem. Designer Monisha Jaising observes that the current updated version is a far cry from the ‘80s bandage dress. “Today’s stars wear it in a relaxed, athleisure-inspired style and strike the right balance - for instance, a voluminous top is worn with a mini skirt or an oversized shirt is teamed with a pair of shorts. In haute couture space too, designers like Giambattista Valli have toyed with a panoply of short dresses. A great mini does justice to a nifty pair of shoes or even a pair of trainers,” says Monisha.

Also, the popularity of mini dresses brings in an element of sexiness. Stylist Mohit Rai recalls, “Thankfully, we live in an era when girls in miniskirts aren’t tagged in a negative way.”

How to ace the mini

-Team a pencil mini skirt with a sweatshirt hoodie.

-Club it either with a pair of thong heels or sneakers.

-Combine it with an oversized shirt or a blazer to balance the overall silhouette.
