The BMW was being driven at 100kmph when it hit the other car, police said. Eyewitnesses recalled that it rammed the side of the Indigo and dragged it for more than 20 meters.

No arrests have been made as the driver fled the scene. He left behind his badly damaged car and an injured friend, Dakshaya Jaiswal, 21. Both are students of DU, the police said.

The BMW belongs to one Devendra Sherawat, a Gurgaon property dealer. Still in the process of confirming the driver’s identity, Jagdish Parshad, SHO of the Sector 29 police station, said, “As per initial information, the youth driving the car is the son of the property dealer.” Sanjay Gulati, 42, and Shama Chopra, 30 — residents of south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar — died on the spot. Chopra’s family said she was pregnant.
