Bengaluru: A 27-year-old man was arrested on Thursday on the charges of murdering his pregnant wife in Karnataka’s Davangere district and burying her body in a forest , police said .
The body of the 7-month-pregnant Rashmi was recovered by police on Thursday.
A police officer involved in the probe said the murder was premeditated and the man, Mohan Kumar, had identified an isolated spot in the forest several days ago and even dug a pit in advance to bury his wife’s body.
Mohan, a resident of Gangondanahalli near Channagiri town in Davanagere, and Rashmi married last year. However, he had suspicions about his wife and restricted her movement. Whenever she spoke to others, he questioned her and accused her of having affairs. This led to constant arguments between the couple, police said.
Following the torture, Rashmi made calls to her parents stealthily. “She had once left home due to harassment and later returned. During this time, a police complaint was registered,” said a Channagiri police officer.
When she came back to her parents’ house around one and a half months ago, Mohan planned to murder her. “From our initial investigation we found that he smothered her with a pillow during her sleep,” the officer said.
He took the body in his car to the predesignated location in Hunaghatta forest area near Ajjampura in Chikkamagalur district.
The officer said the man had planned the murder so meticulously that he filed a missing complaint a day after burying her body. “In his complaint, he said that she had eloped with her lover,” the officer said.
A day later Rashmi’s parents lodged a complaint and told police about the history of harassment. “At the same, we were verifying the technical details of the case and CDR had shown the man was on the move on the night of the murder and there were witnesses who saw him leave the house around 2 am in the morning,” the officer added.
Based on this, the police brought Mohan to police station for questioning. During the interrogation, he confessed to the crime. Later during the evidence collection, he took police to the location where the body was buried.
Mohan has been sent to judicial custody by a local court, police said.
