58 students injured in stampede after earthquake rumour at Bihar railway station

At least 58 students were injured in a stampede fuelled by rumour of an earthquake at Bihar Sharif railway station in Bihar’s Nalanda district. The students had reached Bihar Sharif to appear for an examination.

At least 58 students were injured in a stampede fuelled by rumour of an earthquake at Bihar Sharif railway station in Nalanda district, police said on Sunday.

Police said the students were sleeping on the railway platform as their train reached quite late at night. Around 2 am, the sound of an asbestos sheets falling led many to believe that it was a tremor. (Picture for representation)

Hundreds of students from Supaul, Madhubani, Madhepura and Saharsa districts had reached Bihar Sharif railway station by the Danapur-Rajgir passenger train around midnight on Saturday to appear for an ITI examination, railway police station SHO Om Prakash Paswan said.

The students slept on the railway platform as it was quite late, he said.

Around 2 am, sound of asbestos sheets falling apart led many of them to believe that it was a tremor, the SHO said.

A stampede followed in which 58 of the students sleeping on the platform got injured, he added.

All the injured, who were admitted to Bihar Sharif Sadar Hospital, have been released on Sunday after being administered first aid, the SHO added.
