IndiGo flights cancelled flights highlights: Passengers wait at Terminal 1 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport as IndiGo’s flight disruptions continue nationwide, in New Delhi on Saturday.

IndiGo flights cancelled flights highlights: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Saturday issued a show-cause notice to IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers after a week-long operational crisis hit the airline’s scheduled flights. More than 500 IndiGo flights were cancelled across airports in India on Saturday, with Bengaluru being the wors-hit with 124 flight cancellations. IndiGo, which is India’s largest airline, is facing operational disruptions while chaos continues at airports due to the flight disruptions.

As many flights were cancelled or delayed, confusion continued at major airports as frustrated passengers waited for updates and also tried to locate their luggage. Many took to social media to express their anger as airfares rose sharply on several routes.

IndiGo flight status: Key points

Here are some key points to know related to the chaos:

  • On Saturday, over 500 flights were cancelled across India as the operational chaos entered day 5. Here is the airport-wise breakdown of cancelled IndiGo flights: 124 at Bengaluru airport, 106 flights at Delhi airport, 117 flights at Mumbai airport, 66 flights at Hyderabad airport, 48 at Chennai airport and 42 flights at Pune airport.
  • The ministry of civil aviation stepped in on Saturday after airfares skyrocketed due to IndiGo flight cancellations as passengers looked for alternative options. It invoked its regulatory powers to ensure fair and reasonable fares across all affected routes.
  • The ministry has also ordered IndiGo to clear all pending passenger refunds by 8 pm on December 7. It also directed IndiGo to ensure that baggage separated from passengers is traced and delivered to their home or chosen address within the next 48 hours.
  • IndiGo has said the disruptions are due to a “multitude of unforeseen operational challenges,” including the rollout of Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL).
  • These rules ensure pilots and crew get enough rest between flights, which placed a large number of IndiGo pilots on compulsory rest at the same time the airline increased its winter schedule on October 26.
  • Friday saw the highest count of IndiGo cancellations, rising well above 1,000 and leaving passengers stranded at airports across the country.
  • Hit by IndiGo’s mass cancellations across India, passengers are now facing sharp fare rises as they look for other flights. A one-way, one-stop, economy class SpiceJet ticket from Kolkata to Mumbai for December 6 was priced as high as 90,000, while an Air India ticket from Mumbai to Bhubaneswar was listed at 84,485 on the airlines’ websites. Similar fare spikes were seen on several other busy routes.
  • The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Friday placed its Flight Duty Time Limitations orders in abeyance to help steady the situation.
  • The aviation regulator has also set up a four-member panel to find out what caused the disruptions. It added that the situation suggests possible gaps in internal oversight, operational readiness and compliance planning, which “warrant an independent examination.”

IndiGo flights cancelled flights live updates: What was weekly rest norm for pilots that DGCA withdrew after IndiGo chaos?

IndiGo flights cancelled flights live updates: The carrier has largely been impacted by an acute pilot shortage ever since the new FDTL norms, which are aimed at reducing fatigue and improving rest periods for pilots, came into effect.

These norms establish increased weekly rest periods of 48 hours, extend night hours and limit the number of night landings to only two as compared to six earlier. These rules were:

  • Pilots must be given 48 consecutive hours’ rest every week to help them recover from fatigue.
  • Pilots can only perform a maximum of 2 landings during night operations (between midnight and 6 am).
  • Airlines must not roster flight crew members for more than two consecutive nights with a duty period within the night operations.

DGCA on Friday provided a raft of exemptions to crisis-hit IndiGo to help normalise its operations. Apart from the Flight Duty Time Limitations exemptions, the regulator has provided certain other relaxations that will help IndiGo have more pilots for duty.
