Man dies of suspected food poisoning in Kochi

A 22-year-old man died on Wednesday of suspected food poisoning after consuming ‘shawarma’ roll, a type of Middle Eastern minced meat roll, from a restaurant in Kochi in Kerala. His final autopsy report is awaited.
The deceased was identified as Rahul D Nair, a native of Teekoy in Kottayam district who worked in a private firm in Kochi.
Nair ordered and ate the shawarma through a food delivery app from a restaurant named Le Hayath in Mavelipuram of Kakkanad, the IT hub of the city, on October 18. Shortly after consuming the dish, Nair fell ill, according to his family and friends, and had to be hospitalised. On October 22, he was brought in a collapsed state to a private hospital where he was immediately put on ventilator support.
A medical bulletin from the hospital said, “The patient had a history of fever and loose stools since October 19. The patient was revived, put on the ventilator and was in severe shock. He was under the treatment of a multi-disciplinary team. The patient showed symptoms and signs of severe septicemia and multi-organ dysfunction syndrome. Despite our best efforts, the patient’s condition deteriorated and was declared dead on October 25 at 2:55 pm.”
The health wing of Thrikkakara municipality moved to shut down the restaurant as soon as reports came in of suspected food poisoning.
An officer of Thrikkakara police station said that the restaurant owner has been booked under section 284 (dealing in poisonous substance that could endanger human life) and section 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) of the IPC.
