How CCTV footage helped police trace car’s final journey before Delhi blast

The car explosion near Delhi's Red Fort on Monday was powerful enough to destroy the car completely, leaving no survivors among the three occupants.

Hours after a car blast shook Delhi’s Chandni Chowk on Monday, the investigators say that CCTV footage helped them retrace the final journey of the car that exploded near the Red Fort, killing eight people.

Eight people died in the blast, as per the latest information by 11 pm.

According to an official aware of the matter, the footage shows the vehicle moving from the Daryaganj market area before reaching the parking lot near Sunehri Masjid around 4 pm on Monday.

Cameras later captured it driving along Chhata Rail Chowk, where it took a U-turn and headed towards Lower Subhash Marg.

"It was being driven on the Chhata Rail Chow before taking a U-turn and moving towards Lower Subash Marg. The CCTV footage shows that the car was approaching a signal and had slowed down when the explosion occurred," the official said.

The explosion was powerful enough to destroy the car completely, leaving no survivors among the three occupants. Investigators are now examining the remains of the vehicle and other forensic evidence.

How powerful was the Delhi blast?

Several people nearby were blown apart, their body parts strewn, police and eyewitnesses said as they described the sequence of events. Multiple other cars caught fire; windows were blown out, and buildings trembled.

Eight people died, as per the latest information by 11 pm. The reason for the car blast remained under investigation.

Just after the high-intensity blast, it took about three minutes for someone to call the fire brigade.

Amit Shah on Delhi car blast

Union home minister Amit Shah visited the blast site and said the NSG and NIA teams, along with the forensic department, had begun a thorough probe into the explosion.

Citing hospital authorities, the home minister said eight people lost their lives while several others received injuries in the blast, and the investigators are keeping all options open while probing the incident. He also met the injured at the hospital.

Two men detained, probe underway

At least two men have been detained after the blast. These men, identified as Salman and Devender, have in the past owned the Hyundai i20 car that exploded in Delhi's Chandni Chowk on Monday.

The car's detailed sales history is now being traced to get further clues, police said on Monday night.

So far, investigators have not drawn any conclusions related to any terror plot or otherwise. However, home minister Amit Shah has said all angles are being probed.
