Amid checks to control the entry of illegal immigrants into Manipur without valid documents, police on Wednesday said officials stationed at Mao gate in Senapati district arrested a Rohingya family.
The arrested have been identified as Mohammad Abdullah, 24, and Bibi Ayesha, 23, along with their eight-month-old son Mohammad Abdul Ahdani.
“The arrest was made when they tried to enter the state on Monday,” said officer incharge of Mao police station, Pungam Keishing. “They will be produced before the court of chief judicial magistrate, Senapati district, for further action.”
Mao gate, located about 110km north of Imphal along the Manipur-Nagaland border, is one of the three main entry gates of Manipur. The other two are Moreh in Tengnoupal district bordering Myanmar and Jiribam in Jiribam district bordering Assam’s Cachar district.
The family from Myanmar had with it a certificate issued and signed by one Ragini, the chief of mission of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The certificate was reportedly issued on January 23, 2018, and was valid up to July 22. According to the police, the family said they came to Manipur to visit one of their ‘sisters’ who had been living in the state for over seven years. They reportedly left their home in Myanmar for Bangladesh after the refugee crisis started in September 2017 and stayed in Hyderabad and then Kolkata.
On April 10, 2018, the state police had arrested a Rohingya couple from Myanmar.
After the arrest of eight Rohingya immigrants in Imphal area on May 21, the police, under the directive of chief minister N Biren Singh, decided to keep a check on illegal entry of the immigrants.
With the latest incident, police have arrested more than two dozen immigrants so far since the refugee crisis broke out in Myanmar last year.
