The Samajwadi Party is ready to “sacrifice” seats for the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) to ensure the Opposition’s victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, SP president Akhilesh Yadav has said.
SP, with the support of BSP, won by-elections for Gorakhpur and Phulpur in May, defeating the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in seats vacated by chief minister Yogi Adityanath and deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya. Talk of Opposition unity has grown stronger after the Congress, the Rashtriya Lok Dal, SP, and BSP banded together in the Kairana Lok Sabha by-election in May to defeat the BJP again .
“Our alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) will continue. Even if we have to give up a few seats in 2019, we will do it. We have to ensure BJP’s defeat,” Akhilesh said in Mainpuri on Sunday.
Reacting to reports that he left his government accommodation in a shambles, Akhilesh said false allegations were being levelled against him to tarnish his image.
“I will pay for the damages and losses incurred by the government, if any,” he added.
Accusing the BJP of making false promises, he said the people should remain alert as it raised only those issues which could fetch votes in elections.
“In one election, the BJP rakes up the issue of ‘Padmavati’ while in the other it talks about Jinnah. Voters should remain alert,” he said, adding that the BJP’s tactics were no longer working.
“Farmers are committing suicide but the government is not addressed their grievances. Patients do not get ambulances and pro-poor schemes have lost priority under the present regime,” Akhilesh said.
He also alleged that the BJP government in the state was supporting corruption.
“Senior officers are being accused of indulging in corruption but attempts are being made to hush up the cases,” he said.
Akhilesh challenged the Yogi government to construct the proposed Purvanchal Expressway expressway in 17 months to prove it is better than the SP regime under which the Agra-Lucknow expressway was constructed in record 19 months.
He also questioned the recent cancellation of bidding process for Purvanchal Expressway and promised to discontinue toll charges on cars costing below Rs 30 lakh and vehicles owned by farmers on Agra-Lucknow expressway.
Referring to the SP’s success in by-elections in UP, Yadav mocked the BJP for having lost Kairana and Noorpur despite intense campaigning by BJP leaders.
“The Prime Minister held a road show on a 9-km stretch but lost while I won despite not going there for campaigning,” he said.
“The PM visits Pakistan to have ‘kheer’ while jawans are being killed on border,” Akhilesh alleged criticising PM’s foreign policy.
“We will enhance the amount of Samajwadi pension to Rs 1,500 and grant Rs 5 lakh for Lohiya Awas Yojana,” he said, adding he was confident that the grand alliance would continue and reduce the BJP’s tally to nil in the state.
