West Bengal CM announcement highlights: BJP State President Samik Bhattacharya on Tuesday confirmed that oath taking ceremony for the next West Bengal chief minister will be held on May 9. This announcement comes after the Bharatiya Janata Party saw a landslide victory in West Bengal. As per the data released by the Election Commission of India, the BJP won a total of 207 seats in the state. Meanwhile, the incumbent TMC was reduced to 80 seats.

Mamata Banerjee says ‘won’t resign'

Outgoing West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday alleged that the Election Commission of India helped the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) steal votes in the state.

“We did not fight the BJP, we fought the EC, which worked for the saffron party,” Banerjee said during a press conference in Kalighat, Kolkata.

The TMC leader further added that since the mandate was a conspiracy, she will not resign from the post of chief minister.

“There is no question of me resigning, we were defeated not by public mandate but by conspiracy,” said Mamata.

Who will be Bengal's next CM?

After a record breaking win in the state, the BJP is set to announce its pick for the chief ministerial candidate. Suvendu Adhikari, who defeated chief minister Mamata Banerjee in her home constituency Bhabanipur on Monday, has emerged as the front-runner.

BJP leaders have also said the party has not ruled out names of state unit chief Samik Bhattacharya and vice-president Agnimitra Paul as other probable CM faces.

Paul could become an ideal candidate for the top post should the party decide to back a woman CM. Paul was a Lok Sabha MP from 2019 to 2024.

Samik Bhattacharya, the functionaries pointed out, could be considered as under his leadership the party won the first assembly polls in Bengal. Bhattacharya is currently a member of the Rajya Sabha.

West Bengal CM announcement LIVE updates: Jobless teachers cautiously optimistic after assembly poll results

Following the BJP's landslide victory in the West Bengal assembly election, a section of jobless teaching staff, whose jobs were annulled by the Supreme Court order in 2025, on Tuesday said they now look forward to some appropriate steps by the new government for reinstatement of their employment.

They said they voted keeping in mind the "uncertain future" they have been facing, and expressed hope that the new administration would meet their long-pending demand for transparent and timely appointments.

In April 2025, the Supreme Court ordered the cancellation of the appointments of over 25,000 teaching and non-teaching staff recruited through the West Bengal School Service Commission, citing large-scale irregularities and manipulation in the 2016 recruitment process when the TMC was in power.

"Due to the unimaginable corruption and nepotism by the previous government, most of the jobless teachers are staring at an uncertain future," Mrinmoy Mondal, one of the jobless teachers, told PTI.

"We now look forward to some appropriate steps by the new government for legally reinstating the deserving teachers," said Mondal, also the spokesperson of West Bengal Untainted Teachers Association.

'Untainted', 'deserving' or 'eligible' teaching or non-teaching staff are those whose involvement in the irregularities in the case was not proved.
