The architect of renewed movement for separate Telangana state, Rao was the pick of the recent elections in Andhra Pradesh, steering his fledgling TRS to a stunning victory and emerging as a formidable political force.
Rao, a one-time comrade-in-arms and now a bitter critic of TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu, founded Telangana Rashtra Samiti two years ago to fight for statehood cause and came out with flying colours at the hustings in alliance with Congress. With five Lok Sabha and 26 Assembly seats in his kitty, Rao has emerged as a key player both at the Centre and the state and is set to leverage this strength to pursue his goal of Telangana statehood.
A five-time legislator, Rao made his Lok Sabha debut when he humbled senior BJP leader and a Minister in the NDA government Ch Vidyasagar Rao in Karimnagar.
Reviving the movement for Telangana statehood after a gap of over three decades, 51-year old Rao quit Deputy Speaker's post and TDP to chart a new political course that saw him join hands with the main opposition Congress to defeat the TDP.
