TOGETHER THEY have made a New Year resolution to stand united throughout their lives, together they will fight the injustices meted to them. But, at present, these two girls are recuperating at UHM Hospital. While Razia received burns following an acid attack on her, Poonam was allegedly set on fire by her in-laws for want of additional dowry.

Ever since her in-laws set her afire, Poonam has been struggling all alone in Kanpur as her mother is in Kannauj and it is not possible for her to make frequent visits to Kanpur following financial constraints.  Whereas Razia has one attendant in her father, Shakir Ali, who spends most of his time shuttling between Kanpur and Fatehpur for arranging money for treatment of his daughter.

Razia (18), a student of BA-I at Swami Girishanand Mahavidyalaya in Fatehpur District, was very delighted while coming back to her village Ghunna Tirua in Kannouj from Saifai after getting a cheque for Rs 20,000 from Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav under the ‘Kanya Vidya Dhan’ scheme on August 5, but all her ecstasy was short-lived when a relative threw acid on her when she was fast asleep on the terrace of her house on August 10. In the incident, Razia’s left ear got badly damaged and her face received severe burns. She was rushed to UHM Hospital.

Razia met Poonam in the same ward on October 2 when the latter was admitted with burns. Poonam was set on fire by her in-laws on July 17 as her widow mother could not arrange enough dowry for her. Though a case against her in-laws has been registered but she wants help of some social organizations or a lawyer to help her in making the culprits realise the repercussions of committing such a gruesome act.

Nonetheless, since October 2, in the company of each other, the two have decided to fight out their cause united and ensure the culprits get severe punishment.

Such strong is their bond that they arrange medicines when one of them has any problem, besides enhancing moral support to each other. Telling about their determination, Poonam says, “I have been encouraging Razia to complete her studies after recuperating from injury and we together are determined to fight our cases so that no one can dare to commit such heinous act in future.”

While Razia is willing to guide Poonam so that she can take her studies further from where she left. “Our only constraint is money and our families have become bankrupt due to our sufferings but we are determined to get justice in life whether we get any support from society or not.”

Meanwhile, Shakir Ali said that he visited Lucknow several times but could not meet the CM.
