India eyeing UNSC non-permanent seat

The candidature is for the 2001-12 term, Minister for External Affairs Pranab Mukherjee tells Rajya Sabha.

India has presented its candidature for a non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2001-12 term, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Thursday.

Government is taking necessary steps to mobilise support for India's candidature, Minister for External Affairs Pranab Mukherjee said in a written reply.

Mukherjee, however, denied that this would dilute India's chances for a permanent seat.
