BHARATIYA JANATA Party (BJP) retained the seat of mayor for the third consecutive term. This time, its mayoral candidate Kaushlendra Singh, who secured 1,58,187 votes, defeated his nearest rival Kanyalal Gupta of ruling Samajwadi Party, who secured 1,29,619 votes, by a margin of 28,568 votes.
The counting of votes, which began at 8 am on Monday, continued till the wee hours of Tuesday.
The Congress also fared well as its mayoral candidate Chanderdev Jaiswal secured 64,789 votes. The unexpected results stunned the ruling Samajwadi Party cadre that virtually went into ‘hiding’ soon after trends started pouring in against the party.
The BJP won 35 seats of corporators where as 33 seats were won by Samajwadi Party and Congress secured eight, independents 12 and Apna Dal two. Results show the worst drubbing of Samajwadi Party candidates as it has lost 13 seats of corporators from the last civic polls.
This drubbing was contrary to the claims of the SP leaders that their party would do extremely well in the polls in view of ‘massive welfare schemes’ launched by the Mulayam Singh’ government during its three years in office.
There were many wards dominated by Muslims like Bajerdehia where BJP fared well as compared to Samajwadi Party and Congress. BJP secured 1,441 votes where as SP managed just 546 votes and Congress 671 in the mayoral elections. However, it was after a long time that Congress retrieved its lost ground in civic polls. Its candidate for Chairman of Gangapur Nagar Panchayat Dileep Seth defeated his nearest rival Samajwadi Party candidate Vijay Yadav by a margin of 293 votes. Out of 10 member seats, five went into Congress kitty where as remaining five were bagged by the Samajwadi Party candidate.
Similarly, the Congress candidate for Chairperson of Nagar Panchayat Ramnagar, Rekha Sharma defeated her Samajwadi Party candidate Madhuri Singh by a margin of 684 votes.
