THE YEAR 2005 passed at Allahabad Nagar Nigam with hollow claims its officials who completely failed to provide much needed relief to citizens from encroachment, stray animals, insanitation , bad roads and poor streetlight.

In the history of Nagar Nigam for the first time the District Magistrate Amrit Abhijat took over the charge as administrator following the completion of five-year tenure of Mayor. However just after 21 days, Mayor Dr KP Srivastava again took over the reins following the quashing of State Government order by Allahabad High Court appointing the administrator at NN.
During the short tenure as administrator the DM's handling of the NN affairs got the sanitatory condition improved in some parts of the city.
The atmosphere at NN was also changed. Even majority of corporators had stopped interfering into NN work.
Superficial drive
Despite the clear directive of Allahabad High Court to remove the illegal constructions and encroachments, the NN administration carried out superficial drives just to comply with the order and failed to meet the basic purpose of removing the encroachments.
All the roads they claimed to have been cleared of the illegal encroachment have again been encroached.
Insanitation remained a dominating issue for Nagar Nigam throughout the year.
The safai workers went on a long strike demanding payment for part-time employees and others. Even one part-time employee Shyamlal committed suicide due to financial crunch.
Several private agencies were engaged to improve the sanitary condition but with meagre results.
Dozen of safai karmcharis were suspended from their service on the account of laxity in their duty. Close circuit TV was also installed at NN offices to ensure better functioning .
Delimitation of wards
A section of corporators led by Kamlesh Singh challenged the State Government order to hold civic bodies election without carrying out the delimitation of wards. The Allahabad High Court asked the government to go for delimitation before the NN elections. As a result of fresh delimitation 10 wards are likely to be added in the city.
Mayor laid the foundation stone for Dr Harivansh Rai Bachchan Community Hall in NN premises in July this year. The construction is left midway following the High Court directive. Justice AK Yog visited the Nagar Nigams on August 12 , 2005 to take the stock of the NN plans.
NN, however, has claimed to have achieved the target of realising the house tax. As a result the salary of NN staff is now being disbursed on time.
The Katra vegetable market was shifted to Buxi Bund on the order of High Court but NN did not beautify the area especially the roads which are lying in a shambles.
