Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday said the phone-tapping issue involving Samajwadi Party leaders was a "very serious matter".

"It is very serious matter. Phone-tapping should not be there. There are no two views on it," he replied to reporters' questions on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav's demand for a probe by the state Special Task Force rather than CBI.

Pointing out that he was away from Delhi for the past two days and he was not aware of what the Chief Minister had said on the issue, Singh said whatever he knew on the issue was based on newspaper reports.
