Scores of pilgrims began taking the dip and offering puja at the Kapil Muni temple amidst chanting of mantra.

Over three lakh pilgrims, already arriving at Gangasagar, are expected to take the dip during the Makar Sankranti period which will continue till Tuesday noon, officials said.

Security arrangements on the islands have been strengthened for the occasion.

A temporary police station with a fully operational control room was functioning and senior police officers were camping in the area, officials said.
