A GANG of power pilferers was busted in a joint operation carried out by KESCo and SOG of the district police. Five persons were arrested in this connection on Thursday. The team also recovered Rs 1.48 lakh, six mobile phones, credit cards and a licensed revolver from the culprits. It is being estimated that the gang has caused a loss of several lakhs to the KESCo. An FIR has been lodged with Nazirabad police station. The accused have been identified as Lokesh Gupta, Vimal Sharma, Rakesh Kumar, Nanak and Ramesh Awasthi.

KESCo MD Arun and SSP PC Meena made a formal announcement of the busting of the racket in a joint press conference convened at the office of KESCo MD. Talking to newsmen, Arun said that SP (Vigilance) of KESCo Sunil Kumar Saxena had got specific information about a flourishing inter-state gang of power thieves operating in the city. “The information was passed on to SSP PC Meena and a joint team of KESCo and SOG was formed to nab the miscreants,” added Arun.
After sustained surveillance, all five members of the gang were arrested today from the Nazirabad police station area, added Arun.
The KESCo MD said Lokesh Gupta was the leader of the gang, which was active in the State.
The gang had expertise in abetting pilferage of power in the industrial houses. “Lokesh Gupta also owns a transformer factory in Shahadra, New Delhi,” disclosed Arun.
The gang facilitated the theft of power with the help of latest electronic gadgets and Circuit Transformers (CT), informed the KESCo MD.
Members of the gang were also proficient in tampering with meters, added the MD.
Taking a serious note of the modus operandi of the gang it has been decided by the KESCo MD to apprise the Chairman of the Power Corporation about the gang.
The UPPCL Chairman would also be requested by the KESCo management to dispatch special teams to several districts to make further arrests.
KESCo Chief General Manager SM Agarwal was also present on the occasion.
