Surprisingly, the defeat of the ruling party candidate and unexpected win of the BJP candidate has triggered a debate in political circles. It has also started a blame game within the ruling party leadership with the defeated mayoral candidate pointing fingers on a powerful minister of his party who happened to be assistant election in-charge for the Samajwadi Party.

“We are still shocked as to how the party could lose about 32,000 votes from the constituency of our own minister who was directly involved in the electioneering of the party”, SP mayoral candidate Kanyalal Gupta said.

It may be mentioned that there are a number of wards in Chraigaon assembly constituency, which are represented by the Minister for Forests Virender Singh —- and where party fared poorly.

To name a few — wards like Shivpur, Sikrole, Nai Basti, Pandeypur, Paharia etc –come directly under Chraigoan which is being represented by a minister of the Mulayam Singh cabinet.

The SP secured 869, 1599, 1475, 1088 and 1710 votes where as BJP got (2535), 2401, 2055, 2718, 3297 and 3123 votes from Shivpur, Sikrole, Nai Basti, Sarnath, Pandeypur and Paharia respectively.

The Congress also fared well in almost every ward. SP’s poor show also continued in wards which are home to another minister ranked leader Dr KP Yadav. Dr Yadav is the Chairman of UP Gau Sewa Commission.

Congress party’s good performance in terms of its vote share and overall performance have strongly damaged SP prospects. Polarisation of some castes like Kurmis, Patels etc towards the BJP candidate is another case of SP losing face.
