Tsunami chart to indicate first wave

A comprehensive atlas of 250 tsunami probable regions will give indication of the first tsunami wave before it hits the coast.

Tsunami double time chart, a comprehensive atlas of 250 tsunami probable regions will give indication of the first tsunami wave before it hits the coast, S K Dubey, Director, IIT Kharagpur has said.

Dubey, who worked out this chart along with experts from IIT, Delhi and two institutions one each from US and Canada, said that it covers all the coastal stations of 37 countries spread in three continents around north Indian Ocean.

“This is comprehensive atlas for north Indian Ocean,” he said. “Once there is enough indication, the authorities get time to evacuate people from that area before the first tsunami wave strikes reducing the loss of life and property,” said Dubey. He said the work on preparing chart began after the devastating tsunami struck the Indian Ocean region last year.

“The chart is widely publicised in the countries surrounding north Indian Ocean. It is prepared measuring the intensity of the earthquake that may be generated in the ocean leading to tsunami,” Dubey said.
