From rectal bleeding to sudden weight loss or fatigue, here are the early warning signs of colorectal cancer that demands immediate medical intervention.
Colorectal cancer, also referred to as bowel cancer, develops n the colon or rectum. It often starts as polyps, abnormal growths, which can become cancerous if not treated early. Over the past few decades, colorectal cancer has been observed to have a disturbing rise. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Bhavna Bansal, senior consultant and HOD, histopathology, Oncquest Laboratories said, “Recognising the signs and seeking timely medical advice can make a significant difference in early detection and treatment success. Dr Bhavna Bansal further explained the early warning signs of colorectal cancer we should be aware of:
Changes in bowel habits
Changes in bowel habits that seem persistent over time might be a manifestation of colorectal cancer. This encompasses diarrhea, constipation, or any strikingly consistent alteration in stool consistency that lasts for more than a few days. The individual may also feel that the bowels have not been fully evacuated or witness the stool being thinner than normal.
Rectal bleeding or blood in the stool
Rectal bleeding is a disquieting feature in colorectal cancer. This may present as bright red blood coming from the stool or clots visible on the toilet paper. In some cases, the stools can be dark, tarry, or black, which may signify some kind of bleeding occurring higher up in the gastrointestinal tract. Unexplained weight loss or fatigue
In colorectal cancer, an unintended weight loss is often noted without changes in the subjects' diet or exercise patterns. However, fatigue and weakness are common symptoms of colorectal carcinoma, and these symptoms can be very depressing, with patients unable to easily link them with any other causes.
