Doctor promotes a broader perspective on heart health, urging individuals to consider lifestyle choices and psychological factors alongside medical testing.

Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with factors such as diet, physical activity, cholesterol, blood pressure and stress all playing a role in cardiovascular health. In an August 22 Instagram post, cardiologist Dr Jack Wolfson argues that heart attack prevention should go beyond cholesterol management, with greater emphasis on everyday habits, mental wellbeing, comprehensive testing and other evidence-based strategies. Why heart health involves more than cholesterol

“I'm sure you know that heart attacks are the number one killer of people in the world. But what you probably don't know is that statin drugs don't really lower your risk of having a heart attack,” says Dr Wolfson. He says that while statins can reduce cholesterol levels, lowering cholesterol alone does not necessarily mean that a person’s overall risk of a heart attack has been reduced to a very low level.

Wolfson says heart health should be viewed through a wider lens, taking into account factors beyond cholesterol. “What I want you to do is address the root cause of why people have heart attacks, the way that you eat, the way that you live, and the way that you think,” he says.

Role of diet, lifestyle and medical testing

He describes his “100 Year Heart Method” as an approach centred on eating well, living well and thinking well, along with testing rather than relying on assumptions. He also mentions evidence-based supplements and biohacking strategies as part of his approach to cardiovascular health.

A cardiologist for more than 25 years, Wolfson says conventional cardiovascular assessments can sometimes place too much emphasis on a basic cholesterol panel. He argues that a broader evaluation of an individual's health and lifestyle can provide additional information about cardiovascular risk. “The mainstream way, it fails way too many people again because they don't address the root cause,” he says.

He also stresses the importance of examining dietary patterns, physical activity, lifestyle habits and psychological factors when considering long-term heart health. According to Wolfson, understanding these factors alongside appropriate medical testing can provide a more comprehensive picture of cardiovascular risk.

Dr. Jack M. Wolfson is a cardiologist in Paradise Valley, Arizona. He received his medical degree from Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University and has been in practice for more than 20 years.
