From staying informed to indulging in community care, here are a few ways to manage emotional safety during a crisis.

A crisis situation may not be in our control but the way we address the emotions we feel during that time is. During a difficult time, we may feel a surge of emotions that we do not have clarity on - a mixture of feelings and emotions that is difficult to segregate and express. "It is entirely normal to experience a wide range of emotions during a crisis. Because guilt is such a powerful emotion, it’s the one we identify quickest. There are other emotions you probably hold; that are masked by guilt," wrote Therapist Israa Nasir. Explaining this further, the expert added, "Guilt, anger or sadness in a crisis often stems from a desire to alleviate the suffering of others. Your mixed emotions mean you are human; that you have compassion for the world beyond your own life."

Stay appropriately informed: Sometimes the crisis situation may not be in our control at all – hence, we heavily depend on news and other media formats to gain information regarding such situations. While it is important to stay informed and connected at all times, we should expose ourselves to such distressing information mindfully.

Seek community: Helping others dealing with the crisis can give us a sense of purpose and make us feel that we are doing something to help in improving the crisis. Checking-in with friends and dear ones can make us feel better. Self-care is also rooted in community care, and we should be mindful in taking care of ourselves as well.

Stick to your routines: We should also take care of our own routines and focus on our physical, mental and emotional well-being. It is important to remember that sticking to routines can help in boosting emotional resilience.

Express your emotions: Avoiding or staying in denial will not help us address the emotions. Sometimes, all we need to do is figure out healthy ways of venting out in order to get more clarity.
