Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray on Thursday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was following in the footsteps of Adolf Hitler, asking voters to “decide between democracy and dictatorship”.

Speaking at the same venue in Kamothe, where chief minister Devendra Fadnavis attacked Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar two days ago, Thackeray said, “Check history and you will know that Modi is doing exactly what Hitler did. From the achche din slogan to propaganda through movies, it is all the same…I am replaying videos at meetings, so you don’t forget when you vote. You have to decide if you want dictatorship or democracy in the country.”

Thackeray’s public meeting in Maval assumes significance as Pawar’s family member Parth is contesting here. Parth is taking on Shiv Sena-BJP candidate and sitting MP Shrirang Barne. The Pawars have gone all out to campaign for Parth, with Sharad Pawar himself holding a public meeting in Kharghar on Thursday. The Sena-BJP alliance has accused Thackeray of speaking out against Modi and the alliance following an understanding with Sharad Pawar.

Amongst the several videos played by him, Thackeray played the one that exposed the video on social media that claimed that there was a huge crowd for a Modi rally. It turned out to be for former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s funeral. Thackeray said that it shows the level the BJP can stoop to. “They used the photograph of the family of my party office-bearer to show the success of their scheme, which I exposed in my previous meeting. They use photographs of people who don’t know the BJP is using it. Shouldn’t we bring it out?”

Claiming that he had become a target of the BJP, Thackeray said, “It will not make any difference to me as I have not fielded any candidate. My meetings will however harm them a lot…Now even television channels are exposing the lies of a cashless village in Vasai, and the digital village which turned out to be propaganda. Even the intent letter for plots he gave to PAPs in JNPT has turned out to be a fraud. None of the schemes have worked. Even the village adopted by Modi in Uttar Pradesh is languishing with no development.”
