Mumbai man held for abetting wife’s suicide
According to the police, Sokalram Purohit got married to Manidevi, 26, in 2013.
The Saki Naka police on Friday arrested a 28-year-old garment businessman for allegedly abetting his wife’s suicide.

According to the police, Sokalram Purohit got married to Manidevi, 26, in 2013. On Wednesday, Manidevi had committed suicide by hanging herself in her residence at Maratha Sahakar Nivas in Mohili village, Saki Naka. Sokalram rushed Manidevi to Shatabdi Hospital, where she was declared dead. A post-mortem was conducted and the body was handed over to her family. As per Manidevi’s brother, Sokalram would torture Manidevi mentally and physically because she could not conceive, leading her to take the extreme step.
Based on the allegations, the police registered a first information report (FIR) against Sokalram under section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the IPC and arrested him. The magistrate court has remanded Sokalram in police custody till Monday.
PREVIOUS CASE
The Aarey police arrested a man, his mother and his second wife for allegedly abetting the suicide of his first wife in a chawl in Goregaon (East) on Thursday. The deceased Ram Laxmi committed suicide four days ago because she couldn’t conceive for six years, due to which her husband married her sister. An abetment to suicide case was registered by Laxmi’s father. All the accused are in judicial custody.
