Shankar Mahadevan’s son Siddharth doesn’t want to sing like his dad
The Zinda singer Siddharth Mahadevan talks about how he is slowly getting recognized for his “distinct voice”.music Updated: Aug 16, 2016 08:29 IST
There is no dearth of celebrity kids in the entertainment industry. Actors such as Kareena Kapoor Khan and Varun Dhawan have taken their family name to new heights. The same holds true for singers such as Aditya Narayan and Amaal Malik. Shankar Mahadevan’s son, too, gained prominence for his songs Zinda (Bhaag Milkha Bhaag; 2013) and Malang (Dhoom 3; 2013).
Siddharth Mahadevan, however, says he has always tried to maintain a distinct personality of his own. “I can’t avoid the comparison [with my father],” he says, adding, “I believe I have a different voice from my father, and he agrees too. I don’t want to sing like my dad, or other singers, who I idolise. People recognise my voice now.”
The singer has also sung a track in an upcoming film, starring Katrina Kaif and Sidharth Malhotra. The film’s soundtrack has been created by multiple composers. This trend is catching up rapidly in Bollywood. Does Siddharth feel that too many cooks spoil the broth? “There are pros and cons. It could be great, at times, as the listener can enjoy a variety of songs. But, when it comes to films like Bajirao Mastani (2015) and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, it is better to have one composer. There needs to be one tone to all the songs. You cannot achieve that with too many composers,” he says.

The singer also feels that the “shelf life of a song is far shorter than that of a singer”. “When Shaan and Sonu Nigam started their careers, only one song was released every month. Today, at least 15 songs are released every day. So, a listener starts liking a song on Friday, enjoys it till Saturday and gets over it by Sunday,” he says. Having said that, Siddharth doesn’t necessarily see that as a “bad” thing, as he feels that, today, at least “singers are getting the opportunity to showcase their talent.”
