Photos: Rhythm and smiles as Morocco’s Gnawa artists get UNESCO listing

In a riot of colour, acrobatics and drum beats, Morocco’s gnawa artists joyously celebrated the inclusion of their ancient art-form in UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Troupes of the artists in traditional costumes paraded through the white-and-blue citadel town of Essaouira in southern Morocco Saturday, the sound of their lute strings and steel castanets filling the streets. Gnawa culture, a centuries-old Moroccan practice rooted in music, African rituals and Sufi traditions, was added to UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity earlier in the week. Gnawa refers to a "set of musical productions, fraternal practices and therapeutic rituals where the secular mixes with the sacred", according to the nomination submitted by Morocco. Often dressed in colourful outfits, Gnawa musicians play the guenbri, a type of lute with three strings, accompanied by steel castanets called krakebs.

Ranjeet Singh is applying finishing touches to a Lord Krishna painting in his studio in west Delhi’s Moti Nagar. With him are a galaxy of gods —Shiva, Ganesha, Vishnu, the Buddha, all painted by him and his brother. Set up in 1951 by his father and uncle, the studio “Rangroop”, is known for its calendar art. “Many people think that calendar art is dead, but the fact is my hands are full,” says Singh, and he isn’t exaggerating. Photos: Tramadol, the other opioid crisis in the developing world

A drug addict lies unconscious by the side of a road in Kapurthala, Punjab. Mass abuse of the opioid tramadol spans continents, creating havoc some experts blame on a loophole in regulation and a miscalculation of its danger. Punjab, the centre of India’s opioid epidemic, was among the latest to crack down on tramadol. Researchers estimate about 4 million Indians use heroin or other opioids, and a quarter of them live in the Punjab. (Channi Anand / AP) 12
