In an apparent revolt against the party leadership and the state government, two-time former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA and former chief parliamentary secretary (revenue), Sukhpal Singh Nannu, has accused the BJP-led municipal committee here of using low-quality tiles and other material in the construction of streets and lanes in the city.
On Friday at about 11.30 am, Nannu, with some of his aides, reached the Zira gate area, where work of inter-locking of tiles in streets has been going on for the past few days and held a protest against the use of the alleged low-quality tiles.
"I picked up two of the tiles being used to construct the lane there, and hit them lightly with each other, they broke apart and reduced to mere sand in hands," alleged Nannu.
Nannu and his aides then blocked the road for about two hours in protest against the use of alleged substandard material.
"I had got several complaints that material being used in different works of the municipal committee is allegedly of inferior quality. I have reported the matter to the deputy commissioner and sought a probe but no action has been taken so far. Hence, in public interest, I have come on road to protest and will continue to do so, if the authorities concerned failed to take any action," quipped Nannu, while talking to the Hindustan Times.
"An independent probe should be held into all the on-going or already completed development works by the MC. Work was also being allegedly given to the contractors who grease the palm of the authorities concerned," said Nannu.
"If need be, I will also meet Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal to demand justice for the inhabitants of the area,: claimed Nannu.
Ashwani Grover, president, municipal committee, and BJP leader, rebuffed the charges levelled by Nannu that inferior quality material was being used in the construction of streets.
"They had got complaints regarding use of poor quality material in the laying of streets in that are, following which work was already stopped two days ago," claimed Grover.
"Nannu did the entire drama to take political mileage. No low-quality material will be allowed to be used in any works. We are ready to face any probe in this regard," Grover said.
Ravinder Singh, who is holding additional charge as deputy commissioner, Ferozepur, expressed ignorance of the matter, but assured to get the same enquired.
"Anyone found guilty would be taken to task as per law", said Ravinder.
