In a shocking incident, two Punjabis were shot dead after a group of robbers fired at them, at former’s grocery shop at Indiana in USA around 9 am (as per USA timings).
The victims were identified as Jagtar Singh Bhatti (52) of Preet Nagar in Jalandhar and Pawan Preet Singh (20) of Munnan village in Hoshiarpur.
After killing both, the robbers later decamped with cash and other valuables from the shop. The local police have collected CCTV’s footages from the shop and started investigation into the killing of Punjabis.
Jagtar Singh Bhatti was running his own grocery shop at Indiana South’s village for last seven years, and was living with Palwinder Singh Bhatti, (25). Pawan Preet was working as employee at his grocery shop.
A pal of gloom descended in Preet Nagar, Sodal Road on Thursday late night after the elder son of Jagtar Singh, Palwinder conveyed the news to the family in Preet Nagar. According to the family, Jagtar was shot dead inside the shop by two unidentified assailants, who had their faces covered and weapons in their hands and had entered the shop with the purpose of robbery.
The family said that at first, assailants fired at Pawan Preet and when, Jagtar tried to resist them, they also fired upon him and both died on the spot. His mother, Joginder Kaur said "It is heartbreaking for the family as we were not with him during his last time and could not see him”.
His brother, Inder Mohan Singh Bhatti said that Dalwinder Singh, the younger son of Jagtar Singh, will go to USA for bringing the body home. He said that his brother had gone to USA around 14 years ago and initially worked as a carpenter in New York. He also stated that earlier few months ago, the robbers also attempted to rob his grocery shop but failed to do so. He requested state government to arrange VISA for Jagtar’s son Dalwinder Singh as soon as possible so that body can be brought back home for the last rites.
Similar scene was witnessed in Munnan village as the news of tragic death of Pawan Preet Singh, 20, reached here late Thursday. Pawan's mother Manjit Kaur and his two young sisters were inconsolable when they learnt that he had been shot dead at the store he worked in the US. They revealed that Pawan had left for foreign shores in 2009 for better prospects.
"We got to know about the awful incident from a youth of nearby Talwandi Dadian village who also works in Indiana", said Manjit. She said her husband Balwinder Singh had been informed in Italy and only he would be able to tell how and when Pawan's body comes home.
Shocked villagers had made a beeline to sympathise with the aggrieved family.
