After Gemini Ganesan’s family slammed Mahanati, Savitri’s daughter speaks in film’s defence
The Savitri biopic Mahanati has impressed audiences and critics everywhere, but it has earned the displeasure of late actor Gemini Ganesan’s daughter, Dr Kamala Selvaraj, who is upset with the way the makers have portrayed her father in the film. Keerthy Suresh played Savitri in the Nag Ashwin-directed biopic.
Slamming the makers, Kamala had said that the film defamed Gemini while glorifying Savitri.
Responding to Kamala’s comments, Savitri’s daughter Vijaya Chamundeswari said that people choose to see the film from different point of views. In a media interaction, The News Minute, quoting her, said: “I saw the film from my own perception from my mother’s point of view. My sister may have seen the film from another point of view. It’s just a perception difference, but I won’t find any fault with my sister. She being a Tamilian might have understood the film in a different way as this is a dubbed Telugu movie. It’s true that dad loved mom like anything and the film is not going to create any differences between me and sister Kamala.”
Gemini’s daughter had an issue with the portrayal of her father on screen. She said that he didn’t introduce Savitri to drinking, going by how it was portrayed in the film. Vijaya said: “That scene in Mahanati showcases that mom had a drink with dad, but it doesn’t mean she drank first time with him only.”
Lashing out at the makers, Kamala had recently told The New Indian Express that the film does gross injustice to all the children of Gemini Ganesan. “The film leaves you wondering where the facts end and the fiction begins. It has defamed our father. What has been shown on screen is a one-sided version that glorifies Savitri, and bluntly ignores many other aspects of her life.”
She further added that Savitri had many relationships, and one of them was with Gemini. Kamala feels the film’s portrayal of her father was biased and imbalanced. “The makers haven’t researched and presented the film honestly. The team did not speak to the family and close friends of Gemini Ganesan.”
Actor Dulquer Salmaan played Gemini Ganesan in the Keerthy Suresh starrer Mahanati, which has struck gold at the box office. The film has already grossed over Rs 50 crore worldwide and continues to run to packed houses.
