India vs Brazil Highlights: What a day for Indian football. Against a world-class team, they hold their own. Brazil though won 4-0 thanks to two goals from Lino and one each from Estevao and Pedro. Not many expected this kind of performance from the hosts. They are at the other end of the spectrum, if truth be told. Still, they fought bravely to make the nation proud. They have given so much hope tonight. That India have in them to get better and test bigger nations. Anyway, now they line up against Uruguay here again on Tuesday, October 6. Another big match coming up....Read More
The Indian men's football team are set for one of their biggest challenges as they take on Brazil in a historic friendly at Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday. The match will be the first senior men's international meeting between the two nations. For Khalid Jamil's India, the fixture provides an opportunity to test themselves against the world's fifth-ranked side and a squad packed with elite talent. The Blue Tigers, ranked 138th, will look to remain compact defensively while making the most of their counter-attacking opportunities. Kolkata's passionate football culture is expected to enhance the atmosphere in a packed stadium.
Brazil arrived in Kolkata after a 1-1 draw and a 4-2 victory against Australia in their previous friendlies. Vinicius Junior, Endrick, and captain Marquinhos headline a squad that combines established international experience with emerging talent. Raphinha, however, has withdrawn from the squad because of injury.
Brazil win 4-0!
Gill comes up with a good save in added time. Seconds before the whistle, Lino scores his second goal of the night to make it 4-0 for Brazil. It's over. India give a good account of themselves. Lino scored a brace for the visitors. Estevao and Pedro scored the other two goals. Manvir for India had an extraordinary game today. Team India really outdid itself.
Williams and Manvir substituted!
Mehtab, Rahim, Nickson come in! More than there subs. Williams and Manvir are among the substitutes. India are going to be back on Tuesday against Uruguay. So they are going to try more and more new players. Not a bad strategy. They all need this experience.
Manvir goes for goal
But his angled shot from left is not on target. Past the near post. With that the hydration break has been taken. Frankly, India have had some good chances. Manvir has been very impressive tonight. Williams could have been a little better.
Another miss
Manvir to Williams. From left to right but Williams shot wide. It was a great opportunity. For the last few minutes, Indians have been good on the counter. Just that they have not been able to score.
Williams almost pulled one back
Defensive lapse from Brazil. Williams latched on to the ball and cut into the box from the right and unleashed a shot but the Brazilian goalkeeper was equal to the task. India's best chance today.
Defensive lapse and Lino pounces on
Lovely curler into the far post from the left. Stunning goal from Lino. Third goal for Brazil. Bijoy Varghese the culprit and the Brazilians didn't take long to punish. Mores subs. Pedro goes out for the visitors. Estevao goes out too.
Williams shoots straight at goalie
That was a weak effort from the right. Angled shot but there was no power in it. Shortly after Manvir did muc better on the left. He was quick and showed control but couldn't put the angled shot in. But earned a corner for the hosts. Nothing came of it though.
Ashique, Akash and Gurpreet substituted
Gill, Jay Gupta and Mohammed Sanan come in as subs. Just a reminder that the first Brazil goal came in the 29th minute. Second in the 42nd minute. The second half gets underway here at the Salt Lake Stadium.
Five subs for Brazil
Bruno, Gabriel and Anderson in! Samuel and Douglas also come in. Vinicius Junior and Marquinhos among the substitutes. Fans would be a little disappointed with those two substitutions.
Brazil 2-0 at half time
Frankly, they were expected to score a lot more but the Indian defence has done very well. The hosts have played tidy football so far and deserve credit. They are against one of the best sides in the world but they have managed to hold their own, which is not a small thing.
Apuia clears the ball
It was right in front of goal after coming off Gurpreet and before a Brazilian player could reach it, Apuia kicked it away. Close. India breathe a sigh of relief.
Pedro scores!
What a goal! Another goal g from the right. Beautiful ball from Estevao and Pedro executes a nice right-footed angled shot through Gurpreet. Brazil lead 2-0 after 42 minutes.
India continue to impress
They have been lucky on a few occasions but they deserve this luck. The post has been hit once, since the hydration break. It was Pedro's header. On another day, it could have been 2-0. Be that as it may, the Indian defenders have been on point so far.
Hydration break!
It has been around for a while. It's usually hot in Kolkata at this time of year. A nice cool drink can't be bad. Energy drink of course. Anyway, play resumes now.
Estevao puts Brazil ahead
What a goal! Lovely left foot from the right. Nice angled shot. Gurpreet got his hands onto it before it went in. The deadlock is broken in the 29th minute of the match. India should not get disheartened. They have done very well so far. They should keep up the good work.
Pedro goes for the long shot
Way off the far post. The shot was several yards out from the right. The Brazilians appear to be frustrated. How else can you explain that shot? India meanwhile continue to play their long-ball game whenever they have the ball and there is an opportunity to attack.
Manvir vs Marquinhos
Manvir was on to the long ball in a flash but then Marquinhos reached in time to stop him. Gripping football on display. More than 15 minutes have passed and it is still 0-0. Indian defence rising to the occasion, so far that is.
Great stuff Manvir
What control. He ran into the box from the left, showed great skills. Just that he couldn't execute that final glorious kick. Impressive nonetheless. He can't be blamed, there were Brazilian defenders doing their job nicely.
Corner for India
A weak ball into the box, defended away. Frankly, the Indians have given a good account of themselves so far. Vinicius Junior nicely tackled by the Indian defender on the left, shortly after. Another Vini attack and Gurpreet gets in the way. Nice cut into the box from the left but the tall goalkeeper is equal to the task.
Brazil attack early on
Vinicius Junior from the left. Indian defence under pressure right at the start. Meanwhile, Apuia tried to provide a long ball and almost succeeded. That's going to be India's strategy tonight. Defend well and look for those long-ball opportunities.
National anthems underway
Brazil first, hand on heart. Quite a few Brazilian fans in the stands. Serious rendition. Now it's India. Proud moment for the country. Passionate singing. And finally the clapping from both teams. It is all set to kick off.
Salt Lake lively
Thousands of spectators out there. All looking forward to the once-in-a-lifetime game. Believe me you, once the players walk out, it will feel like electricity passing through the stadium. West Bengal loves its football. Today they have a great opportunity to show that.
What Anwar Ali says ahead of the game
He said a lot of things. The gist is they want to improve on their performance against Panama, in terms of defence. He is really looking forward to this game. One can understand. You don't play Brazil everyday.
Starting line-up (Brazil)
Same formation as India, 4-2-3-1
Pedro Morisco (GK)
Matheuzinho, Arthur Dias, Marquinhos, Douglas Santos
Danilo, Andrey Santos
Estevao, Gabriel Bontempo, Vinicius Jr.
