FIFA World Cup 2022, Germany vs Japan highlights: Gundogan's penalty in vain as Japan stun Germany 2-1

What a performance from Japan! For the first time in World Cup’s rich history, Japan have won a match in which the Asian giants conceded first. They lost 7 games and ended up drawing 2 before registering a come-from-behind win over the four-time champions.

Another upset! Japan have beaten Germany in its group opener at the FIFA World Cup 2022. Extraordinary scenes at the Khalifa International Stadium. Two late goals in the second half and Japan have bagged three points with a massive win over Germany.

Germany claiming a penalty after Fullkrug goes down inside the box. However, it was Yoshida, who got the ball and play continues. Japan are still ahead and Germany need a goal, they need it quickly! 7 minutes of added time is almost up. 

Youssoufa Moukoko has replaced Serge Gnabry. Earlier, Germany replaced Musiala with Mario Gotze. K Havertz had made way for N. Füllkrug in the 80th minute of the game. We are heading into injury time!

What drama in Qatar! Minutes after scoring the opener for Japan, Takuma Asano has stunned Germany with a brilliant finish. Japan have taken the lead in the 83rd minute of the game. A massive upset on the cards!

The referee has blown his whistle and it's half-time. Ilkay Gundogan's first-half penalty paved the way for Germany to open the scoring in its Group E match against Japan. Germany 1- 0 Japan at half-time.

Havertz with a simple tapping and Germany have extended its lead before the end of the first. However, VAR is checking the goal at the moment. OFFSIDE! Germany's second goal has been ruled out. Germany 1-0 Japan after 45 minutes.

Gundogan, Gnabry and Muller have made sure that Germany dominate possession in the first half. Musiala came close to double Germany's lead but his shot let everyone down. Germany are still knocking on the doors for a second goal. Four minutes of extra time as Germany hope to finish ahead of Japan at the Khalifa Stadium.

Germany finished bottom in its group at the 2018 World Cup. The European giants are eager to make amends in the 2022 edition of the showpiece event. They have scored the all-important opener in their first group game against Japan at the FIFA World Cup 2022.

Did you know? For the record, Japan have completed its seventh consecutive appearance at the World Cup. This is the second-longest streak of recording back-to-back appearances at the World Cup by an Asian nation. South Korea have featured at the World Cup for 10 straight editions!

A brilliant counter from Japan and they have issued an early warning by finding the back of the net. Japan thought they have scored but the flag is up. A wake up call for Germany!
