Not the start he would have wanted

Not an Olympic debut that G Sathiyan would like to remember. He looked in control of things, leading 3-1 against Hong Kong's Lam Siu Hang, but the tables turned steadily thereafter on Sathiyan. His body language was always up, though, the screams after winning a point never going soft.

The result resonates with the Sania-Ankita exit earlier in the day. In both the matches, the Indians appeared in cruise mode before crashing.

  • JUL 25, 2021 11:47 AM IST

    Another shocker!

You have got to feel for Sathiyan here. After losing the first game, he came back strongly to win the next three. Game 4 was one of the best games he would have played all year but Lam Siu Hang had other plans.

Trivia: Before this match, Sathiyan led their H2H battler 2-0, and dropped only one game in both matches.

The Indians were in total control for the large part of the two sets, but their failure to close out the match at 5-3 in the second cost them. The Kichenok sisters, both inside the top 50 in the rankings with better natural chemistry and understanding, were always going to be a tricky opener for the Mirza-Raina pair.
