Indian tennis ace Somdev Devvarman, who struck a golden double last year by finishing on top, in both the Commonwealth and Asian Games singles events, on Tuesday received the Arjuna Award from sports minister Ajay Maken.
Somdev could not attend the ceremony held on August 29 to receive the prestigious award from the President Pratibha Patil as he was taking part in the US Open at that time.
Currently ranked 70 in the world, Somdev had won gold medals in men's singles at both the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi and the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China last year.
He also teamed up with Sanam Singh to bag another gold medal for India in the men's doubles event at the Asian Games. The 26-year-old Somdev was also a part of the Indian team that won Davis Cup in 2009 and 2010.
In 2009, he helped India figure back in the World Group after defeating hosts South Africa, while he was a key member of the side when the country won the Davis Cup in 2010, defeating Brazil.
