US court stays 26/11 accused Rana’s extradition to India

A US court has granted a stay on the extradition proceedings of Pakistani-Canadian businessman Tahawwur Rana, wanted in connection with the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, until his appeal is finalized. SC rules HCs cannot suspend sentence unless case of acquittal made out

Finding the order that suspended the life sentence of the convicts “impermissible”, a bench of justices MR Shah and JB Pardiwala set aside the high court’s order passed on September 16 last year, and directed the three men, convicted for murder, to surrender before the Hajipur trial court within three days.

UK court suspends discharge of Pramod Mittal’s bankruptcy

Pramod Mittal, brother of steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, has had the discharge of his bankruptcy suspended by the high court in London. Mittal was adjudged bankrupt in 2020 on a petition by Moorgate Industries after he failed to pay £140m. The trustee appointed to oversee the bankruptcy alleged that Mittal failed to cooperate in sharing crucial information and was evasive about his assets and liabilities. The ruling means Mittal will remain on the bankruptcy register and be debarred from becoming a director or involved in company management.

Mittal was adjudged bankrupt on a petition by Moorgate Industries after he had failed to pay £140 million. The trustee appointed to oversee the bankruptcy had alleged that Mittal had failed to co-operate in sharing crucial information and was evasive to pointed questions about his assets and liabilities. Against the September 2015 allotment of plot for ₹131 crore, WTC Chandigarh has already paid ₹108 crore to GMADA within the allowable time period extending to June 2026. Further, WTC Chandigarh has been regularly highlighting the discrepancies in their calculations and delay in grant of permission to mortgage (PTM) by GMADA against executed term sheets since 2022.

MCOCA court rejects Jigna Vora’s plea against bail bond

Former journalist Jigna Vora's plea seeking exemption from bail bond was rejected by the MCOCA court. She was acquitted of all charges in the J Dey murder case in May 2018 but was asked to submit a bail bond in case of appeal. The appeal was rejected by the HC and the six-month period for a further appeal to the Supreme Court lapsed. The court rejected her argument and asked why she did not file the bail bond during the appeal period.
