Among the medals announced on Sunday, there three are Kirti Chakras and 13 Shaurya Chakras – the second and third highest peacetime gallantry honours, the defence ministry said in a statement.

1,082 security personnel to be felicitated with gallantry awards
Overall, a total of 1,082 police personnel across the country were awarded the police medal for gallantry (347), and president’s police medal for meritorious (648) and distinguished services (87).

Major Somnath Sharma was killed while leading his men on a fighting patrol to Budgam village in Kashmir while evicting Pakistani raiders from Srinagar airport in November 1947. He was given the Param Vir Chakra posthumously in November 1950.

Nine Shaurya Chakras among 409 gallantry awards announced on R Day
Out of the 28 Param Vishisht Seva Medal winners, 19 were army officers, including Lieutenant General Ranbir Singh, who is heading the northern command. Four Lieutenant Generals have been awarded Uttam Yudh Seva Medals. A total 32 officers have been awarded Ati Vishisht Seva Medal. Of 31 officers, 32 are Majors General and one Brigadier.
