Delhi government blocks steep hike in one-time parking charges

Car buying gets costly in Delhi as one-time parking charges hiked up to 18 times

The transport department collects the parking charges on behalf of the MCDs, which claim that it is meant for creating parking infrastructure in Delhi. The proposal by the three MCDs to hike the charges was pending for quite sometime and was cleared by the transport commissioner on her last day in office, an official said.

Car buyers will have to pay higher one-time parking charges in 2019 as the Delhi Transport Department has approved a recommendation for a hike by three municipal corporations of the city.(PTI)

Congress alleges misuse of parking charges by Delhi civic bodies

The Delhi Congress on Wednesday alleged “misuse” and “diversion” of over Rs 3,000 crore earned through conversion and parking charges by the three BJP-ruled municipal corporations of the city, even as it demanded a high-level inquiry into the matter.

Congress said the corporations did not issue tender for even one of the 13 proposed multi-storey parking facilities that were to be developed from the parking and conversion charges.(Picture for representation)

South Delhi civic body gives nod for increase in one-time parking charges

If approved, the one-time parking charge for vehicles costing up to Rs 4 lakh will increase three-fold — from Rs 2,000 to Rs 6,000. Similarly, for cars priced between Rs 4 lakh and Rs 8 lakh, the civic agency will levy Rs 10,000 as parking charge; and for vehicles worth Rs 8 lakh to Rs 12 lakh, charges will be Rs 15,000. For vehicles costing between Rs 12 lakh and Rs 20 lakh, the charge will be Rs 30,000,

Those buying vehicles between Rs 20 lakh and Rs 40 lakh will need to pay Rs 60,000 as vehicle registration charges and those buying vehicles costing above Rs 40 lakh will need to pay Rs 75,000. Currently, the south corporation charges Rs 4,000 as one-time parking charges for all vehicles above Rs 4 lakh.(HT File Photo)
