Republic at 70: The unique goals and challenges of Indian secularism

Virtually all commentators agree that India is secular — which seems unarguable given the word’s inclusion in the Preamble. The truth, of course, is that secularism did not appear in the version of the Constitution whose anniversary we are now celebrating.

Congress sends R-Day gift to PM Modi; Tharoor slams ‘Jinnah logic’ in CAA

<p>The Indian National Congress party took a jibe at the Prime Minister on the occasion of the 71st Republic Day. The Congress tweeted a screenshot of an online order and said that it had sent a copy of the Constitution to the PM to be read once he has some time off from 'dividing the country'. At a Republic Day event, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi recited the Preamble to the Constitution, a trend common to many anti-CAA protests across the country. Meanwhile, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor claimed that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 was driven by 'Jinnah's logic' and not MK Gandhi's.</p>

Watch how J&K celebrated its 1st Republic Day after special status removal

<p>The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir celebrated its first Republic Day since revocation of its special status. Festivities in Jammu were presided over by the Lieutenant Governor, Girish Chandra Murmu. He hoisted the tricolour and also addressed the gathering. Referring to the dilution of Article 370, Murmu said that the people of J&K had been elevated to the same stage as the people of the rest of India in terms of 'rights, benefits and possibilities'. Meanwhile, in Doda, the Indian Army organised a 'Run for Fun' marathon which witnessed a significant turnout.</p>

Serial bomb blasts amid Republic Day celebrations in Assam; none hurt

<p>Serial low-intensity explosions rocked the state of Assam on the occasion of India's 71st Republic Day. Four blasts were reported from Dibrugarh, Sonari and Duliajan. No loss of life or property was suffered in the explosions which took place between 8:00 am and 8:30 am approximately. The terror group, United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent) or ULFA(I), claimed responsibility for the crime. Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal, called it an act of cowardice and said that the police had been instructed to take strict action against the culprits.</p>

India celebrates its 71st Republic Day today. On this day in 1950, the Constitution of India came into force. The Republic Day parade, which is considered the main attraction of the day’s celebration, was held along Rajpath. It was a 90-minute event. Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was the chief guest at the parade. Before the parade began, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute at the National War Memorial and President Ram Nath Kovind unfurled the national flag along with General Manoj Mukund Naravane, Chief of the Army Staff, Admiral Karambir Singh, Chief of the Naval Staff, Marshal Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria, Chief of the Air Staff. Republic at 70: In Partition’s shadow, Constituent Assembly adopted secular charter

Taking a leaf from the Round Table conferences, the Assembly created several committees on specific subjects (fundamental rights, minorities, and allocation of powers). Drawing on the committees’ recommendations, the Assembly’s advisor, B.N. Rau, prepared a draft constitution in October 1947.
