During his tough days, Sawant would stand outside Shankarji’s (Shankar Mahadevan, we presume) studio to hear him sing. Even through his Indian Idol season 1 stint, Sawant admitted that he was never sure about winning the contest. While singer-judge Sunidhi Chauhan told Sawant that it’s big deal to remember your early days even when you’ve achieved success in life, composer-judge Anu Malik hugged him.

Sawant recalled that he had borrowed a pair of jeans from his friends because back then, he didn’t have the money to buy one. He even bore rashes, but continued to sing on the show.
