The Democratic National Committee (DNC) on Wednesday voted to remove 25-year-old activist David Hogg from his position as DNC vice chair. Hogg is the son of Kevin Hogg, a former FBI agent, Navy pilot, and elementary school teacher, and Rebecca Boldrick, a teacher in the Broward County Public Schools system in Florida.

Who is David Hogg?

Hogg gained national prominence after surviving the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. In the wake of the tragedy, he became a vocal advocate for stricter gun control and emerged as a prominent figure in the youth-led movement for political reform. Since then, he has been active in a range of progressive causes, and in February, was elected as a vice chair of the DNC.

However, on Wednesday, DNC members voted 294–99 to nullify the election that had elevated both Hogg and fellow Democrat Malcolm Kenyatta to vice chair positions.

Hogg Says He Will Not Seek Re-Election

"It is clear that there is a fundamental disagreement about the role of a Vice Chair - and it's okay to have disagreements. What isn't okay is allowing this to remain our focus when there is so much more we need to be focused on," Hogg said in a statement on Wednesday.

"I have decided to not run in this upcoming election so the party can focus on what really matters."

The leadership shakeup comes at a time of significant turmoil within the Democratic Party. Following President Donald Trump’s win in the 2024 election and the GOP’s subsequent takeover of both chambers of Congress, Democrats are facing deep internal divisions over strategy and direction.
