Flanagan, 46, is a member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe. She has frequently spoken about the influence of her family and Indigenous heritage on her political career.
She was raised in St. Louis Park by her single mother, Patricia Flanagan. Flanagan has often credited her mother, a public school teacher, with shaping her commitment to public service and education.
Flanagan was married to Tim Hellendrung, with whom she has a daughter named Siobhan. The marriage ended in 2017.
She later began a relationship with former Minnesota Public Radio Host Tom Weber in 2018 and got married in 2019. Flanagan and Weber continue to raise their family in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, with 13-year-old Siobhan.
Peggy Flanagan career
Flanagan was on the Minneapolis Board of Education from 2005 to 2009. She went on to spend nearly a decade working for Wellstone Action, the group founded to carry on Senator Paul Wellstone's legacy. As one of the first trainers for Wellstone Action's main program, Camp Wellstone, she educated thousands of organizers, elected officials, and candidates, including Governor Walz.
Following her tenure at Wellstone Action, Flanagan was the executive director of Children's Defense Fund - Minnesota, a non-profit child advocacy group dedicated to leveling the playing field for all children in our state.
Flanagan was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2015, where she represents her hometown of St. Louis Park as well as Golden Valley, Plymouth, and Medicine Lake.
