A Boeing 757, designated as Delta Flight 2204, took off from Atlanta en route to Orlando on Saturday, carrying 199 passengers and six crew members, as per Fox5.

Shortly after departure, the flight crew declared an emergency and returned the aircraft to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport due to reports of fumes in the cockpit, as stated by a Delta spokesperson.
Upon landing, first responders greeted the aircraft on an airport taxiway, where passengers and crew evacuated the plane using emergency slides. Subsequently, ground crews transported everyone back to the main terminal via bus, according to airline officials.

Delta has confirmed that passengers are being transferred to a replacement aircraft to continue their journey to Orlando, as stated by an airline representative. Maintenance teams are still present to perform a comprehensive inspection of the grounded aircraft.
"The flight crew followed procedures to return to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport after reports of fumes on the flight deck. A slide evacuation occurred on a taxiway, and customers are being re-accommodated on a new aircraft. Safety is paramount at Delta, and we apologize to our customers for their experience," a spokesperson for Delta remarked in a statement.
Flight crews exercise significant caution regarding fume events, as contaminated bleed air can impair crew performance without any clear visual indication.
The standard protocol dictates the prompt use of oxygen masks and a diversion to the closest appropriate airport.
According to a spokesperson from Delta, airline officials have not yet verified the cause of the fumes present in the cockpit. Maintenance teams are presently assessing the Boeing 757 to identify the source of the problem.
