Former Union Minister Basanagouda Patil Yatnal expelled from BJP for 6 years over ‘indiscipline’
In response, Yatnal claimed his expulsion was due to his criticism of dynasty politics and corruption, asserting he would continue work for North Karnataka.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has expelled senior leader and former Union Minister Basanagouda Patil Yatnal from the party for six years, citing repeated instances of indiscipline. The decision was announced on Wednesday by the party's Central Disciplinary Committee, which issued a statement instructing Yatnal to refrain from participating in any party-related activities.

According to the official statement, Yatnal had been issued a show cause notice on February 10. After reviewing his response, the committee determined that he had consistently disregarded party discipline, despite prior assurances of compliance. As a result, the BJP leadership decided to expel him with immediate effect.
Yatnal responds to the action
Following his removal, Yatnal responded on social media, alleging that he was penalized for speaking out against dynasty politics and corruption within the party. In a post on X, he claimed that he was being targeted for advocating reforms, challenging authoritarian leadership, and demanding the development of North Karnataka. He asserted that certain vested interests had orchestrated his expulsion to serve their own agendas.
“The decision to expel me will not deter my fight against corruption, family politics, and the development of North Karnataka. I will continue to work for the people with the same dedication and determination,” Yatnal stated. He expressed gratitude to his supporters, including party workers, religious leaders, media personnel, and his family, acknowledging their unwavering support.

Yatnal has been an outspoken critic of former Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa and his son, B.Y. Vijayendra, who currently heads the BJP’s Karnataka unit. In December 2023, he alleged that irregularities amounting to ₹40,000 crore took place under the Yediyurappa government during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. He had previously warned that if expelled, he would expose these alleged financial misdeeds.
Additionally, Yatnal had proposed a public awareness campaign concerning amendments to the Waqf Bill, but several BJP leaders opposed his initiative, urging him to refrain from organizing independent events. Over the years, he received multiple show cause notices from the party for various acts of defiance, culminating in his expulsion.
