Chandigarh: ASI suspended for misusing bank cards of arrested men

An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) has been suspended for allegedly misusing the credit and debit cards of two persons arrested in connection with an immigration fraud case. The cop has also been accused of making one of the suspects sign a blank cheque.

Police have not confirmed the authenticity of the allegations made by the accused, they have suspended the ASI and have tasked the vigilance department with investigating the matter. (HT File)

Officials, wishing not to be named, said ASI Ashish Pratap Singh, posted at the Sector 17 police station, had been tasked with investigating an immigration fraud case registered against Sky High Immigration in Sector 17. The proprietors, Shantanu and Baljinder, were booked and later arrested from Dera Bassi. After Shantanu got bail from a local court, he came up with the allegations against the ASI. He alleged that while the cards were under the cop’s custody, they were used to get a vehicle serviced and for other purchases. He also alleged that a blank cheque that he was made to sign was later dishonoured.

While the police have not confirmed the authenticity of the allegations made by the accused, they have suspended the ASI and have tasked the vigilance department with investigating the matter.

This comes days after the Bapudham police post in-charge, along with an ASI, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation in connection with a corruption case. Two more cops were arrested on Tuesday for helping Vikram Wadhwa, prime accused in the IDFC bank fraud case, by taking him to a hotel in Sector 17 after he received treatment at Government Multi Specialty Hospital in Sector 16.

They had allegedly helped plan his escape before a police party raided the hotel.
